Back to School Tips

The new school year is back in full-swing, and while it's an exciting time for most, it can be especially trying for foster youth. With that in mind, we've compiled tips on how to help navigate these changes while building their confidence to ensure a successful transition.

  • Ask them if they're interested in sports: Being involved with team sports can help impart discipline, patience, and a sense of feeling valued. Not a sports fan? Consider checking out local opportunities for music lessons, after school programs, or other community-oriented groups!
  • Take a photo: By snapping a photo on their first day of school, you send the message that you're proud of their commitment to education.
  • Engage in a post-school chat: When they come home from school, ask them about their day. Doing so will help them feel valued, and will give them an opportunity to talk through any highlights or challenges they might have experienced.
  •  Involve them in the preparation: If they bring their lunch each day, have them help in the food selection and packing process. Giving them a voice and shared responsibility will help create a sense of independence and maturity.
  • Visit local museums: Checking out local museums or interesting landmarks will help get their brains into learning-mode.
  • Use apps to help you stay organized: Apps like iHomework are great for helping kids keep their assignments organized.
  • Communicate with their teacher: Take some time to talk to their teacher about their specific needs and strengths. This will help ensure the teacher and your kiddo will be successful in the classroom!
  • Celebrate their wins: Whether it's a good grade on an assignment, or learning something new, by helping them see the positive you reinforce the message that they're valued and important.
