Employee of the Month: Hannah Shaw

Hannah Shaw

What originally made you want to work with EA?
I started working with EA as a Social Work Intern through my MSW program. I was immediately drawn to EA's values, and the amazing people I had the opportunity to work with. Before my interview, I researched EA and found the Employee of the Month write-up for my Supervisor, Tiffany McGee. She shared her long-term commitment to supporting foster children and foster families, and that really inspired me to want to be a part of the EA family.

Describe what your best day on the job looks like:
As we all know, everyday looks different! My ideal day involves being a genuine support for someone - foster kiddo, foster parent, or colleague. I feel the most energized any time I can help someone get through a challenging time or celebrate a small victory.

What do you wish people knew about working in your field?
There are a lot of assumptions about "the foster care system" that I have found to be completely untrue; mainly that foster youth are not properly supported. There are so many incredible, hard working Social Workers, families, and community resources that care deeply about foster youth.

How do you practice self care?
So many ways, as this is so important! I love cooking and trying out new recipes (even if they don't always come out like I planned). I love animals, and am truly at my happiest when I am surrounded by dogs. I also really enjoy listening to true crime podcasts, and I will happily annoy friends with my recommendations.

What's a hidden talent you have, or something about yourself that would surprise most people?
If I were not a Social Worker, I would definitely be a Travel Agent. I absolutely love to plan and coordinate trips and vacations - even if I am not the one going.

Anything else you'd like to add?
My absolute favorite part about working for EA is the connections that I have made here. Every time I call another office, it really feels like a genuine team (even when we are miles apart). So many colleagues reached out to help when I was an Intern, and that is such a unique, wonderful aspect of this agency.
