Employee of the Month: Shirley Yapchiongco, Payroll Bookkeeper
How long have you been with EA? What roles have you had?
This year is my 8th year with EA. From December 2016 to July 2020, I was the Office Manager of the Chico office. I helped and supported our Social Worker and Case Manager in the placement of Foster Family Agencies (FFA) and the Transitional Housing Program clients.
From July 2020 to August 2022, I was still the Chico Office Manager, but my role changed. I performed administrative duties to support the Directors and Supervisors of the Mental Health, Human Resource Department and Resource Family Approval (RFA). On September 01, 2022 I became the Payroll Bookkeeper of the Agency.
What originally made you want to work with EA?
I saw the exceptional work ethic of my friend who introduced me to EA. He exhibited enthusiasm and commitment to make the lives of the foster kids better. Having witnessed this over the years, I knew I wanted to be a part of EA with the hope that I, too, can make a difference to the lives of people I meet and work with.
Describe what your best day on the job looks like:
Best day will be processing or closing out a payroll with no issues. You know that staff will be paid on time. Another best day is responding to a call or an email on a timely manner. This shows that their time was valued, and the day was favorably fruitful.
What do you wish people knew about working in your field?
Payroll is a very complicated and challenging task because there is a short turnaround time in processing a payroll. It also has many moving parts before you can close it out. This is the reason why a good attention to detail is of great importance.
Payroll also becomes increasingly complex with the growth of the company. When I started processing payroll in 2022, I was only processing pay of 230 staff. Now, we are now processing 270! There is however a great sense of satisfaction and fulfillment you gain in doing the payroll job especially when staff are paid on time.
How do you practice self care?
I enjoy working in the garden. Gardening makes me feel peaceful and content. Just spending time around my plants eases me from stress and worries.
What's a hidden talent you have, or something about yourself that would surprise most people?
I started helping my aunt in their store as soon as I learned to add and subtract. She assigned me at the cash register at the age of 7. From then on, I was always fascinated with numbers and problem solving.
Anything else you'd like to add?
This is a good year for Payroll. We are now in the digital world - our timesheets are finally electronic!
I want to thank everybody for taking the time to learn with us. Your patience is highly appreciated.
