Summer Safety Tips

With temperatures hitting three-digits across the country, it’s no surprise that many families are packing up the kids and heading off to the nearest body of water. While we’re big fans of using water activities to help beat the heat, it’s important to remember that even a few inches of water can be hazardous to kids. Drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional death among kids ages 1-14, but by taking some basic precautions, you can help keep the kiddos safe!

As a result of the high temperatures, many people experience heat-related illnesses that can be especially dangerous for younger children. No need to stay indoors all summer, we’ve got you covered with a handy list of tips to ensure your family stays safe, even as the temperatures rise!

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Keep your home cool by not using your stove or oven to cook
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing in light colors
  • Never leave your pets or children in the car, even for a few minutes
  • Wear sunscreen & reapply often
  • Be careful in cooler water, as body temperatures can drop quickly, especially for younger kids. Signs of hypothermia include muscle cramping and shivering
  • Playing in a pool? Keep kids away from drains and suction fittings, and teach them to never run near the pool
  • Sign your kids up for swimming lessons
  • Heading to the beach? Teach your kids to never turn their back to the ocean, as waves can catch them unaware
  • Check the depth of the water before allowing kids to jump in
  • Remove any toys from the pool after they’re finished swimming. This will discourage them from trying to retrieve them unsupervised
  • Remove access ladders and secure safety covers when the pool isn’t in use
  • Take CPR/AED courses to familiarize yourself with basic life-saving techniques
