Foster to Adopt vs. Private Adoption

Foster to Adopt

When a family fosters to adopt, they become a certified resource (foster) home. Foster children of various ages, including many school-age children and teenagers, require placement in such homes. Children and their foster homes receive support from the Child Welfare System, and financial reimbursement is provided to maintain services and systems of support. It is important to understand that adoption may not be the outcome for every child involved in the Child Welfare system.

Private Adoption

When adopting a child domestically, families seeking adoption usually work with a private adoption agency to adopt a child from the birth mother. This is known as private domestic adoption.

When a family decides to go through the private adoption process, they are required to pay a fee. This fee is used by the private adoption agency to conduct a home study, facilitate the matching process, and conduct the relinquishment and court process.
