Leadership Spotlight: Zach Anderson, Operations Director

How long have you been with EA? How did your career path lead you to your role here?

zach anderson and family

11 years. My parents fostered children all through my childhood (eventually adopting 6!) so I was quite familiar with the ins and outs of foster care. In 2009 I had moved back from out of state and was having some difficulties landing a job. Out of a bit of desperation, I applied at Youth4Change to be a facility manager at a level 12 group home. I ended up Supervising the home very quickly, learning on the fly. After 5 years at YFC I was ready for a change up and grabbed an opportunity to be a County Liaison for EA. 11 years later and there will be no more bouncing around for me. I found my work home.

How do you prioritize self-care while leading in a high-demand field?

I don't really set aside time in any particular way. Many of my interests and hobbies aren't things I necessarily need to block off time for, but I do have some daily activities I try to always get in. Getting up early always helps, and of course, technology. I love to read, so getting in 10-15 minutes on a device is usually easy if I get some time. Working outside on my house/land is also one of my favorite things to do so weekends and days off—I've usually got some project going.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I'm a bit of a hobby farmer. I enjoy raising animals, gardening, planting trees, etc. Chasing uncooperative animals, fixing fences and digging holes is not something most people find relaxing, but I thoroughly enjoy everything associated with the lifestyle. I drag my kids along as well.

What’s a small daily habit that helps you stay productive?

I try and follow through with the things I say I'm going to do. Whether it pertains to others or things I tell myself.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

That awareness is the greatest agent for change. Depending on which study you read, we can spend 90-99% of our day on "auto pilot". Trying to find and then spend as much time as possible in the "center" has been a very important and impactful practice for me.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Just that I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the EA Conference!!
